WOMEN IN THEATRE:MIZA DRIVEN BY CREATIVITY AND PRECISION IN THEATRE

Stage technicians are the unsung heroes of the theatre world. They juggle many roles to ensure a production’s technical aspects are handled with precision and creativity, letting the performers shine and the audience to be fully immersed in the experience.

“Precision mixed with creativity makes for spectacular, technically perfect, emotionally powerful, and thought-provoking productions,” says Joburg Theatre Stage Technician Miza Ntombekhaya Ngaye.

She says her job needs both a man’s and a woman’s touch because some days involve heavy lifting and moving, while others require a delicate hand.

Passionate about her role, Ngaye says it also gives her a chance to meet different people, growing personally through chats and working with artists and producers.

“Unlike office jobs, which often limit interaction, theatre exposes you to a wide range of people and viewpoints, creating an exciting environment for constant learning and discovery. You have to be a people’s person to enjoy this job,” she says.

She notes that every interaction in theatre contributes to development, whether you’re an artist or behind the scenes making sure the show comes together with the right lights, sound, and props.

Ngaye says a typical day usually involves technical know-how, creative problem-solving, and teamwork, all working together to make a production successful.

“From when the client arrives to set up their stage, to the minutes before the curtain goes up, a stage technician must be ready and aware of every single detail of the show,” she says.

Ngaye has a background in theatre and communication but quickly realised she preferred being behind the scenes to being in front of an audience.

“My passion will never die for as long as theatre shows are alive on stages worldwide. I visit different theatres all the time to be inspired and learn new tricks of the trade,” she says.

When Ngaye isn’t working, she takes time to rest, relax, and recharge. Balancing a busy schedule with downtime is important for staying well and avoiding burnout.

“A good work-life balance means many productive days on the job,” she says.
