The refurbishment of the Engage Men’s Health clinic in Johannesburg is expected to welcome more gay men and MSM (Men who have Sex Men) as the clinic expands its services to the marginalized group of the LGBTQI+ community. Now this portion of the key population will receive tailored services to their requirements ensuring that they have equitable and safe access to health services.
The Engage Men’s Health Clinic offers comprehensive healthcare services including general physical health examinations, HIV counseling, and testing, provision of ART (Antiretroviral Therapy), PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), Viral load / CD4 monitoring, general HIV management, and adherence support, STI screening and basic treatment, TB screening and referral. It will also be a collection point for ARVs, PrEP, condoms, and water-based lubricants.
Joseph Adam the Program Manager at OUT LGBT Well-being said not only does the facility offer free, welcoming professional, and comprehensive HIV/AIDS and STI prevention and treatment services, but the clinic serves as a base for outreach teams and smaller sites that work across the Johannesburg.
“The facility is also becoming a safe community space for MSM and LGBTQ+ communities and will soon begin to provide mental health support, harm reduction services, and an on-site social worker,” said Adams.
MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko commended the clinic for bridging the gap between the LGBTQI+ community and the Department by offering a safe space for everyone, regardless of their background or identity.
“By fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect, the clinic not only meets the specific needs of the LGBTQ+ community but also champions the cause of equal health rights for all. This approach is vital in building a healthcare system that is truly comprehensive and equitable, reinforcing the clinic’s role as a leader in community-based health initiatives,” said the MEC.
In addition, Anita Sampson the Deputy Director of, the Bilateral Health Office at USAID Southern Africa said that the presence here of PEPFAR and USAID is to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to key populations.
“We offer our full support to initiatives that address the unique health needs of key populations such as MSM and working to end the HIV/AIDS in South Africa. This collaboration underscores our dedication to promoting health equity inclusivity and access to quality healthcare services for all,” said Sampson.
The success of this institution is a result of the collective efforts of PEPFAR, USAID, OUT LGBT Well-being and the Johannesburg Health District.
